John Lennon remembered by a friend -- and himself

Two new looks at John Lennon just in time for his 75th birthday celebration. The BBC's show "Verbatim" has a special show featuring John talking in his own words. The soundscape incorporates rarely heard archive interviews, poetry readings, studio outtakes and alternative recordings of some of his most acclaimed compositions. It's taken from conversations recorded between 1962 and 1980.

And on Beatles Examiner, we have published a world exclusive excerpt from Dave Morrell's new book “1974 The Promotion Man New York City” in which he writes about smoking a joint and listening to the Beatles song "How Do You Do It" with Lennon. (John played the song for them.)

Video preview of new PBS interview with Ringo that begins tonight

A new two-part interview with Ringo Starr by Tavis Smiley begins tonight (Oct. 1) on local PBS stations.

Said Smiley, "Tonight, I'm joined by rock and roll icon Ringo Starr for part one of a special two-night conversation. The world's most famous drummer, the man who gave The Beatles its "heartbeat," has also enjoyed an immensely successful career as a solo artist and band leader, releasing over two dozen original and live albums since 1970, the year the Fab Four officially called it quits. A talented photographer, Starr recently published "Photograph," both a collection of rare and never-before-seen images and a 15,000 word manuscript chronicling his youth, his time with The Beatles, and beyond."

In the video clip, he describes the emotion the band felt on arriving in America for the first time. Check the show website for your local TV listings. Part 2 is scheduled to air nationally Oct. 2, but PBS stations are free to run shows as they wish, so again, check the website for the correct time.

New Beatles TV show, book

ITV has announced it will be doing a special documentary on the Beatles' hits tied in with the new "Beatles 1" DVD. It's titled "The Nation’s Favourite Beatles Number One." We mentioned this on "Things We Said Today" on the "Beatles 1" DVD announcement show about two weeks ago. There's no air date or any word on whether it'll be seen in the U.S.

Also, author Andy Babiuk has announced his expanded "Beatles Gear The Ultimate Edition" will be released on November 10. He says the new 512 page book is double the size of the original with over 650 additional new photos including many never before published images of the Beatles with their gear. You can order it here.
